Monologuing the Music
(Not just the lyrics)

Nicole Stinton (NIDA) introduces her innovative paper on transforming musical theatre acting through "Monologuing the Music," a method designed to enhance character development by integrating musical elements typically overlooked in traditional approaches.
In this pioneering approach, actors are encouraged to delve beyond the lyrics of their songs and explore the nuances of pitch, rhythm, and instrumentation early in the rehearsal process. By bridging the gap between textual analysis and musical interpretation, "Monologuing the Music" empowers actors to make informed, creative decisions that deepen their understanding of character and enrich the overall dramatic texture of the production.

Drawing from her extensive experience as a director, vocal coach, actor, and educator, Nicole demonstrates how this method not only improves performance quality but also cultivates a holistic understanding of the interplay between music and storytelling in musical theatre. By embracing "Monologuing the Music," actors are equipped to deliver performances that resonate authentically with audiences, enhancing both the artistic integrity and emotional impact of the theatrical experience.
